Large expanses of gold leaf. Fine tooling and luxurious fabrics. These phrases only begin to describe panel painting in Italy during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Yet, how are we to understand the sumptuous use of color and the masterful use of technique in these paintings? In this talk by graduate student gallery talk lecturer Denva Jackson, we will look at examples of Italian panel painting from the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, examining the technique used in creating them and the significance of its overall effect.
