Concert artist and music instructor Brett Bottomley is joined by Berklee College of Music staff member Claire Steger to talk about the history and music of the Chapman Stick, an electric stringed instrument invented in California in 1969 by Emmett Chapman. Chapman likewise developed a unique playing technique for the Stick that involves each hand independently tapping the strings (rather than plucking them) to produce separate musical lines. Bottomley and Steger demonstrate and perform on their own Sticks, as well as one acquired by the MFA in 2000.
