Musical Instrument Gallery Talk and Demonstration

Yale University doctoral student Daniel Lee will talk about the history, repertoire, and playing technique of the violino piccolo, a small violin used during the 17th and 18th centuries that was tuned a third higher than regular sized instruments. Lee will be joined by Rhode Island violin maker Karl Dennis, who this past year completed the construction of such an instrument for Lee, based on an example from 1613 by the Brothers Amati. Lee will demonstrate this replica instrument, as well as a remarkable violino piccolo made in 1734 by Antonio Stradivari, which is on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts.
