Harriet Powers, an African American woman who was born a slave in Georgia in 1837, created this extraordinary quilt in 1895. Described as “expressive in its every stitch of a most fiery imagination,” the quilt contains fifteen squares depicting familiar biblical stories, as well as, local legends and natural phenomena. Join curators for an up close look at the quilt and its remarkable story. Stay for the private reception.
