In 1960, Michael Graves was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome fellowship by the American Academy in Rome. Having just completed his graduate studies in architecture, he embarked on a grand tour that led to a lifelong fascination with the landscape, the culture, and the history of Italy, which greatly influenced his approaches to architecture, design, and art. At the forefront of architecture and design since he founded his practice in 1964, Michael Graves has broadened the role of the architect in our society and raised public interest in design as essential to the quality of everyday life. Graves has helped shape how we now think of architecture, interiors, and furnishings as a continuum and is a household name for his collaboration with Target bringing good design to a wide audience.
Michael Graves discusses how his time in Rome left an indelible mark on his life and work.
