Christraud M. Geary, Teel Senior Curator of African and Oceanic Art

In 2003, Chris Geary became the MFA’s first curator of African and Oceanic Art. Geary developed a strategy for collecting; the holdings have grown through generous gifts, and the exhibitions have brought African and Oceanic art to the larger public. She highlights some of the most significant acquisitions and focuses on future endeavors. Together we contemplate the challenges that lie ahead as tradition-based works from Africa and the Pacific become rare and their prices skyrocket, and museums increasingly turn their attention to global contemporary arts.
