WHAT ARTISTS DO Available Mon-Thu (two hours) All tours in this category support Arts Learning Standards for Visual Arts 1–5, in addition to the Curriculum Frameworks relevant to tour content.
In this rich, two-hour program, gallery instructors lead an hour-long tour focusing on your choice from below. During the second hour, studio art instructors lead an art project so students better understand the creative process.

Available daily (one hour) Introducing the Art of the Americas: Highlights of the MFA Collection Start times: Mon-Thu 10 am; 11 am-closing every 15 minutes. Fri-Sun 10 am-closing every 15 min. This Highlights tour offers an overview of the art of North, Central and South America in the museum’s 53 new galleries. The collection includes Pre-Columbian and Native American art, as well as the full range of American art from the colonial period through the first half of the 20th century. Students will look closely at a selection of paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and artifacts in the new wing to learn how artists use the elements of art to create meaning and how art reflects the time and culture in which it is made. This tour is recommended for all ages. (Various)
Available Mon-Thu (one hour) Exploring the New World: Art from the Ancient Americas, Colonial America, and the New Nation 9:30 (early entry), 10:30 am The New World tour offers a chance to explore the earliest art of the Americas. Portraits, furniture, silver and gold tell stories about life in the pre-Columbian era, colonial North America, and the new nation. This tour is recommended for students who are interested in the history and culture of the Americas before 1820. (HSS 5.1-5.2, 5.4, 5.6-5.11, 5.17-5.18)
Understanding Massachusetts History: The Art and Objects that Illustrate its Distinctive Past 9:45 am (early entry) The Massachusetts tour provides a window into the American Revolution and daily life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Students will see paintings of revolutionary leaders and of the events associated with them. They will visit period rooms from both rural and urban houses, become familiar with everyday objects and artifacts, and learn how ship captains, merchants and artisans made a living. This tour is recommended for students who are interested in the history and culture of Massachusetts. (HSS 3.1-3.7, 3.12)
Creating an American Identity: Art from the Early Republic to World War II 10:15 am The American Identity tour illustrates the events of the 1800s and early 1900s that shaped how Americans perceived themselves. Students will explore the impact of industrialization, westward expansion, the Civil War, immigration, and the American role in international relations. They will see examples of painting, sculpture and decorative arts from that time period that reflect those changes. This tour is recommended for high school classes studying United States history and culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. (HSS US I, US II)

New World 9:30 (early entry), 10:30 am See guided tour description above. Studio: Clay: The Functional Art Clay was used by both the Native Americans and the Colonists to make practical but beautiful objects. Among these were vessels to carry water, store food, etc. Both cultures developed certain images for decoration, though they differed in their designs and symbols. In this exploration, students choose a style of the Native Americans or the early colonizers and build an object with clay. (HSS 5.1-5.2, 5.4, 5.6-5.11, 5.17-5.18)
Massachusetts 9:45 am (early entry) See guided tour description above. Studio: Painting Boston Neighborhoods The neighborhoods of our city are as vibrant and colorful as we are. In this exploration, we ask students to choose what makes their neighborhood special and unique—a favorite place, neighbors and friends, a park or the games they can play there. Students then paint their neighborhood portrait with acrylics on canvas. (HSS 3.1-3.7, 3.12)
American Identity 10:15 am See guided tour description above. Studio: Mixed Media Our country is comprised of elements from many cultures while still reflecting a unique identity. Languages, food, fashion, style, art, and music from many parts of the world all come together here to develop the unique American Identity. By mixing images from print, magazines, and labels with acrylic paint on canvas, students are invited to create their own version of our unique American Identity.
