DescriptionProbably a test proof, or a late impression from a surviving block, for a nagaban surimono, later cut down to ôban size. A partial image of the costumed figure also appears upside down at the top of the sheet.
A similar work, with three figures by three different artists including Shun'ei and Morikazu, is published in Katsukawa Shunshô (Ôta Mus. cat., 2016), #136.

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
