山岡は、安寿姫(あんじゅひめ)と厨子王(ずしおう)を騙した人買い「山椒太夫(さんしょうだゆう)」に取材した芝居の登場人物。二代中村芝蔵は後の二代中村雀右衛門。衣裳の羽織には中村家の定紋「祗園守」(ぎおんまもり)がある。 -- 武藤 純子K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
