Unpatterned red cut velvet ground with a central medallion of St. John the Apostle: possibly taken from a vestment; Spain or Italy 15th-16th century. Flanked on either side by a scrolled frame medallion, one with a compass above a flower, the other with a coat of arms; possibly Spain, 16th century. Each medallion is within a similar floral wreath. Polychrome silk and metallic yarns. Vertical bands of metallic yarn lace divide the field into three sections. Across the top is a row of ten gothic letters in metallic yarns. Metallic yarn fringe across the bottom. Central medallion badly worn.
