First edition, "Library" issue, published simultaneously with a British edition by William Heinemann, London. It consists of a title plus 26 illustrated letters, reproduced in color lithography from Nicholson's hand-colored woodcut originals. In a prospectus (not present in this copy), the publisher lists the three formats in which the this title was issued: "An illuminated alphabet by William Nicholson will be published in September 1897 in three editions: 1. The Popular Edition. Lithographed in colours on Cartridge paper, for 5s. - 2. The Library Edition. Lithographed in Colours on Dutch Hand-made Paper [mounted on brown paper], in cloth, for 12s. 6d. - And 3. The Edition de Luxe. Printed from the Original Woodblocks. Hand-coloured, and signed by the Artist, for 12 Pounds, 12 s. net." According to some sources, the deluxe edition consisted of only 26 copies.
