Drake catalogues a second state, but Haden corrects the description to read: “A portion of the foreground has been removed and the plate PREPARED FOR MEZZOTINT BUT NOT EXECUTED.”
THE MFA’S IS STATE III.
I (Da, 2 impressions; Ha). The river scene has been etched in and there are two pairs of small, indistinct figures at the edge of the right bank. A bank of mud projects midstream. With the inscription Brentford Ferry Seymour Haden 1864 (E.l.l.)
II (H1). Published in Études à l’Eau-Forte (No. XIV). The mud bank has been removed and is replaced by reflections from the bank in the water; these end almost at the near river bank, and the two larger figures on the bank, re-etched, are more distinct. With the dedication To Whistler (D, u.l.).
III (D1, H1). Published in Études à l’Eau-Forte (No. XIV). To Whistler removed.
