Silver filigree fan with gray silk connecting ribbon. Design includes fleur-de-lis and stylized Napoleonic stars. Silver washer and filigree ring. Original red leather box with monogram “M.L.B.” (“Marie Louise Bonaparte”) and French crown.


Said to have been given by Napoleon Bonaparte to second wife Marie Louise (daughter of Francis I of Austria) upon his marriage to her in 1810; by 1844: Professor Gondenzi of Bologna; 1860: given by Gondenzi to Professor Casale of Venice; by 1921, purchased by Contessa Antoinette Zuppiani of Asolo; by 1925, collection Pauline H. Shirer; by 1925, collection Surradge R. Cameron; by 1976, purchased from Cameron by Esther Oldham; gift of Esther Oldham to the MFA, June 9, 1976.
