DescriptionBuddhist priest's stole (ôhi) with decoration of geometric lozenges and clematis. Center, border: Red and white silk checkered ground patterned in long floats of supplementary wefts. Motifs of clematis and camellias float against a red and white checkered background pattern. The treatment of the long floats of supplementary wefts is typical of eighteenth-century fabrics of this type. Shiten: Red silk ground with woven-in designs of the four guardian kings in supplementary wefts of flat gold-leafed paper thread.
Lining: White silk ground with diamond-shaped motifs in twill. MFA structural analysis: Silk, gilt paper; 2/1 twill weave with discontinuous supplementary-weft floats (silk) bound at intervals and continuous supplementary wefts (gilt paper)) bound in twill order; pieced and appliquéd.
