DescriptionCircular canopy with design of Chinese lions, butterflies and flowers in blue, green, yellow, black and white silk embroidery and gold metallic thread couching on a red plain-weave silk ground; two narrow bands, attached at the top and hanging loose down on side, with Chinese characters embroidered in gold on red silk; edged with white silk knotted fringe along the bottom; circular top and lining constructed with natural bast fiber (ramie or hemp?) fabric. This canopy was possibly used in a festival procession or as a theatrical prop.
