Center of a dish depicting Book of Jeremiah being fed to the Flames. Shallow bowl, slightly domed bottom, on low ring. Gray brick wall, blue barred windows, fire at left; five seated figures, two standing, in blue, yellow gray & green cloaks, on white dais. Hand at far left holds blue book, part of open one nearby. In blue lettering on back: Di Hieremia il libro à fuoca e fiama. In gray: Jsn Crack thru flame in molded wood frame.


Richard von Kaufmann (b. 1849 - d. 1908), Berlin; December 4-5, 1917, Kaufmann sale, Cassirer and Helbing, Berlin, lot 528, sold for M 2100. 1955, Eugene L. Garbáty (b. 1880 - d. 1966), East Norwalk, CT [see note 1]; 1955, gift of Eugene L. Garbáty to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 8, 1955)

[1] Garbáty emigrated from Berlin to New York between 1938 and 1939, bringing much of his art collection with him. It is probable, though not securely documented, that he had acquired this already by 1938.
