Literary illustrations, with additional erotic scenes. This edition is a French translation of Boccaccio's Decameron, with illustrations copied from those in the famous 1757 Italian edition by Gravelot, Eisen, Boucher, and Cochin (MFA copy: 37.1371a-e). This edition does not contain the many tailpieces and vignettes. The illustrations are signed by Vidal, who credits the original designers. In addition, this copy contains the series of erotic, "free" illustrations attributed to Gravelot, here, as noted by Cohen-de Ricci, in "detestable reproduction." There are numerous errors in pagination in this edition, which is without publisher's imprint.
ProvenanceAcquired in 1911[?] by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
