DescriptionPyxis of high conical form, with decorative bands of gold inlay at bottom, middle (wreath) and top edge of lid (egg and dart). Slightly domed lid decorated similarly; band along edge and entire central part. Details lincised and punched.
Found with silver pyxis fragment 1970.491.
ProvenanceBy 1971: with Galerie für Griechische, Römische und Byzantinische Kunst, 6 Frankfurt-Main, Germany (according to the recommendation for acquisition the pyxis was said to come from northwest Asia Minor and to have been known for years while in the possession of the Schmidt family in Frankfurt [this must have been an oral communication from the dealer]); purchased by MFA from Galerie für Griechische, Römische und Byzantinische Kunst, March 10, 1971
