Five loom widths of natural and dyed camelid wool. Design of central rectangle with rosettes in lattice pattern, framed by two borders of stylized vines, birds, fruit, etc., each border separated by narrower guard band of undulating fringed vines. In magenta, purple, blue, ochre, tan, red, and orange. New cream cotton backing.


From the 18th/19th century until 1988, passed by descent within the family of a private collector [see note]; May 17, 1988, anonymous private collector ("various owners") sale, Sotheby's, New York, lot 26, to Landon T. Clay, Peterborough, NH; 1988, year-end gift of Landon T. Clay to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 25, 1989)

NOTE: According to the 1988 Sotheby's catalogue, the cover was "in the original owner's family and passed through descent since the 19th century."
