This idyllic scene shows the imagined home life of the Crown Prince and Princess, with a luxurious lifestyle combining Japanese and Western customs. The Prince wears a uniform and sits in a chair in the garden, while the Princess is seated on the veranda to the right wearing Japanese court costume. Ladies-in-waiting care for the couple’s first two children. The little boy at the left is two-year-old Prince Hirohito, the future Shōwa Emperor; the baby is the future Prince Chichibu, just one year old at this time.
