Usually placed at opposite ends of a sideboard or side table, knife boxes stored and often secured knives, forks, spoons, and serving utensils. Like many other pieces of Neoclassical-style furniture, these boxes are ornamented with delicate inlays. The plaque on the front is engraved with the initials of Nathaniel and Elizabeth West. Before 1800 few knife boxes were made in America.
