Geometric border on rim of plate and around central portion. Scene shows hero slaying lion; smaller lion and serpent below. Vertical band with geometric design on either side. Animal on fragmentary portion of center of plate.
Vessel may depict a scene from an ampitheatre. While such spectacles remained popular in Byzantium up until the seventh century, depictions of venators and gladiators are not often found on material culture from this period.
