DescriptionThe head and neck are in relatively good condition, with slight wear on the nose and chipping at the base of the neck. The neck may have been worked for insertion in a draped statue(?). The soft, indefinite style is "Alexandrian," and the back of the head and neck look as if they had been partly finished for completion with a veil in plaster or in marble. The subject must have been a goddess. The ultimate inspiration is similar to that of the head from Chios in the fourth century B.C.
ProvenanceBy 1912: with E. P. Warren (said to be from Alexandria); gift of E. P. Warren to MFA, 1913
