The lower part is of cornucopia shape, with a slit or groove on the edge of the outer curve. On the top sits a rude sphinx with a large ring on its back. The sphinx has a thick, rolled collar. Almond eyes and feathers on the chest are incised. The face is worn. Deep green patina, with pitting and earth deposit.
By 1887: with Luigi Boccanera (said to be from the sanctuary of Diana at Nemi); March 25, 1888: purchased by R. Lanciani from Luigi Boccanera; purchased by MFA from R. Lanciani, 1888, for $493.92 (this figure is the total price of MFA 88.538–88.644 and 89.9–89.31)
