DescriptionKnife cover (tantô bukuro) with design of flying cranes and clouds in white, brown and red silk and gilt paper strip discontinuous supplementary patterning wefts on a blue twill-weave silk ground. The cover is made from a length of fabric folded over and stitched together on three sides, has a single loop carrier along one side and is lined with natural plain-weave bast-fiber fabric (asa?).

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
