Inscriptions歌麿画 女風俗品さだめ 琴指南
和琴の起こりハ神代に弓六張をならべて弦を打ち鳴らせしを始めとせり。近世八橋検校作り出せる所にして表組七ッ裏組六ッ合せて十三組といふ外に新組十一あり秘曲ハ流によりて別あり。

大礼三百曲禮三千とて唐倭ともに其式多し。まづ礼の大意と云ハその身の分限をよくわきまへ知る事を肝要とするなれバよく心を責めて努め行ふべし。

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
