Description京の祇園祭の行事の一つで、芸妓たちが仮装する練物(ねりもの)を描いたシリーズ。初代市川市紅(いちかわしこう)(のちの五代市川団蔵(いちかわだんぞう))の助八(すけはち)役に扮した花菱屋(はなびしや)くまの。五代市川団蔵が市紅名を使うのは文化12(1815)年春から、団蔵名を使い始めるのは1818年からである。市紅は文化12年4月大坂、中の芝居「振分髪真鳥実記(ふりわけがみまとりじっき)」で百姓助八役を演じ、同年5月4日から京、南側芝居(みなみがわしばい)でも同一狂言の同一役を演じている。 -- 田辺 昌子K

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
