A lady standing before waterbirds as her attendant shades her with a parasol, the border punctuated by alternating reserves decorated with figures and birds.


Probably a private American collection [see note]. January 22, 1998, anonymous sale (sale 8806), Christie’s, New York, lot 52, sold to Gretchen E. Viall (d. 2016), Providence, RI; by inheritance to her son, William A. Viall III, Providence, RI; 2016, gift of William Viall to the MFA. (Accession Date: November 9, 2016)

NOTE: An old, handwritten label on the underside of the plate suggests that it was in an American collection for a number of years before being sold.
