Begun as a subscription project by Basan and Le Mire to engrave a large series of illustrations to the Metamorphoses, which were then to be included in the translation published in 1767-1771. The original prospectus (a copy of which is bound in the MFA volume of proofs [M18663ff.]) is datable to May of 1766; in it, the finest proofs were to be reserved for subscribers. The book publication was split between a group of ten booksellers; the printing was by Prault. This MFA copy was published by Delormel. Eisen had the largest number of illustrations, some 58 of the 140. The remaining illustrators are listed in the constituents. See Bibliography for helpful discussion by Griffiths.

The MFA also owns (M18663-M18804) a bound volume of proofs before letters of all the plates; it also includes the original letterpress prospectus for the series. Another volume of plates only (with letters) is 37.1710.
ProvenanceAcquired in 1924 by William A. Sargent, Boston (1858-1936), by whom bequeathed to MFA, November 17, 1937.
