This scene was sketched on the copper on the deck of a Channel steamer as it approached the French port at 3 A.M.
When published in the early issues of the Études there was text on the verso (p. 22, the first page of Burty’s descriptive catalogue) which gives directions to assist amateurs in handling the loose plates so as to keep them in order. In time these directions were transferred to the foot of the sheet bearing the title of the first etching (Out of Study Window).
III (D1, H1). Published in Études à l’Eau-forte (headpiece to the Catalogue). The inscription added 3 a.m.
Schneiderman (1983) p. 207.
