Coffins and sarcophagi

The brightly painted decoration is organized into horizontal registers with a white background. The surface was coated with clear varnish, which has turned yellow. The decoration is largely obscured by a resinous substance, poured on the coffin at the time of burial, which has turned black over time.


Acquired in Egypt by Robert Hay (1799-1863); 1868: sold to Samuel Way; inherited by C. Granville Way; 1872: given to the MFA by C. Granville Way.
