THE MFA’S IS STATE V.
I (Da, 2 impressions Ha). A manor house set among trees in the distance. The cliffs are drawn in outline. There are faint scratches in the right and lower center, otherwise the plate is bare.
II (Hb). The bay is sketched in and there is a yacht in the offing. Three deer and part of the body of the fourth are introduced into the foreground. The faint scratches removed.
III (Hc). The head of a stag added to the incomplete body. A horizontal line in the upper left near the cliff promontory, additional work on the foliage at the left, on the cliffs and in the upper right background. A line added in middle distance beyond the deer.
IV (Hd). The head of the stag worked upon and is complete. Vertical line added to the cliffs nearest yacht, additional work on background and additional shading on hills on the right and the field before the manor.
V (H1). The cliff nearest the yacht removed, thus the bay is extended beyond the dark cliffs and above and to the right of the stag. THIS IS THE MFA’S.
