Jewelry, The Ancient World



Brown carnelian (also called sard). Intaglio. Oval gem with very slightly convex front, flat back, and inward back and front bezels. Bust of female, in profile to the right, with upper part of bow topped with a griffin-head. Hair is gathered up into a half-knot at the back of the head and held in place by a fillet tied around the crown of the head; the remaining locks fall along the neck in loose ringlets. Two rows of four curls are arrayed across the brow, next to three longer ringlets in front of the ear. Left shoulder is draped but the right breast is bare.
