Brilliant pinkish-red silk warp and weft, with natural linen backing weft. Design shows two main alternating motives: an Imperial crown above an eagle with a ribbon in his beak and crossed sceptre and sword in front of his body; a pineapple between foliate scrolls. Separating these motives are pairs of addorsed winged lions with bodies ending in foliate scrolls; between them, a banderole with the motto “Equidad en la Justicia.” This brocatel was woven for Maximilian Archduke of Austria, as Emperor of Mexico, and intended for the Palace of Chapultepec in Mexico City; it was never delivered. Two and one-half widths of material per curtain; pieced at the top. About 35 cm. of the brocatel is turned back at the top of each curtain. Condition fair.
