DescriptionBrilliant pinkish-red silk warp and weft, with natural linen backing weft. Design shows two main alternating motives: an Imperial crown above an eagle with a ribbon in his beak and crossed sceptre and sword in front of his body; a pineapple between foliate scrolls. Separating these motives are pairs of addorsed winged lions with bodies ending in foliate scrolls; between them, a banderole with the motto "Equidad en la Justicia." This brocatel was woven for Maximillian Archduke of Austria,as Emperor of Mexico, and intended for the palace of Chapultepec in Mexico City; it was never delivered. Two and one-half widths of material per curtain; pieced at the top. About 35 cm. of the brocatel is turned back at the top of each curtain. Condition fair.
