Pair of large covered vases with bombe-shaped lids, topped with a lotus bud, decorated in red, blue, and gold polychrome decoration in the Japanese Imari style featuring a pheonix perched on a flowering rock surrounded by Chinese birds, peonies, and Japanese-style fans. One vase is marked with conjoined “PAK” in overglaze iron-red.

Inscription

Marked vase has two labels: "Collection G. Ephis / DEL 276" and "G. Lefebvre Antiquaire. 24, rue du Bac, Paris"

The unmarked vase also has Lefebvre label as above, and "Collection G. Ephis / DEL 277"

Markings

One vase is marked with conjoined "PAK" in overglaze iron-red, the other unmarked.

Provenance

1982, sold by Lefebvre et Fils (dealer), Paris, to the G. Ephis collection (private collector), France; 2012, sold by the G. Ephis collection to the MFA. (Accession Date: October 24, 2012.
