Many chairs had "slip seats"-loose, removable frames that supported the webbing, stuffing, and show cover of the upholstery. To change or update the look of a chair, the slip seat could be recovered with new fabric quickly and easily. The slip seat of this chair has been recovered several times.

ProvenanceDescended in the Oliver family, and bears a brass plate inscribed "Oliver - Boston Tea Party." The reference is probably to Peter Oliver, who was one of the leaders of the Boston Tea Party. The chair passed from the Olivers to Oliver Wendell Holmes and his heirs; November 22, 1935, lent by Mrs. Edward Jackson Holmes; 1941, gift of Mrs. Holmes (Accession Date December 11, 1941)
