ProvenanceBy tradition, originally owned by John Hancock, Boston, Mass., and possibly the "leather sofa" valued at 1 pound and located in the Great Entry listed in his 1794 estate inventory; by 1846, owned by Capt. Josiah Sturgis; entry in Pilgrim Society's earliest acquisition book (Library and Cabinet 1820-1881), records the gift in 1846 to the Society of: "A couch which formerly belonged to Gov. John Hancock. Presented by Capt. Josiah Sturgis of the Revenue Cutter Hamilton of the U.S. 1846"; 1957, acquired by exchange with the Pilgrim Society, Plymouth, Mass.
