This sphinx wears a flat petasos (flat, broad hat). Feathers are represented by lines and dots of incision. Dark green patina, with some corrosion and encrustation.
By 1951: Vladimir G. Simkhovitch Collection, 27 Barrow Street, New York 14 (letter of April 11, 1951 from him says he bought it from Koutulakis; letter of March 5, 1952 says he bought it from a Greek Parisian dealer, who usually went to Greece and Crete every year and who offered him the sphinx as soon as he got it; a further letter on March 22, 1952 says he believes it is of Ionic origin); purchased by MFA from Vladimir G. Simkhovitch, November 5, 1951, for $ 1,500.00
