This carved “Star Dust” brooch is laminated with red bakelite and features an apple juice bakelite dog with a brown leather collar suspended on a gold-tone metal chain. “Star Dust” refers to a product manufactured by the Catalin Corporation in 1935 which consists of particles of gold and/or silver suspended inside Prystal, a transparent phenolic resin.

NOTE: This is part of a large collection of costume jewelry given to the MFA in 2018, which had been built over about 40 years.
