万代のねがひをこゝに納めおく
 苔の下よりいづる水かな

奉額 もゝ草の年の押や水仙花

札立峠(ふだたてとうげ)

天長元年東国大旱魃にて/五穀ハ勿論人畜草木も/助かるべき法も手を尽し/けれども雨降ず然る処当山にふしぎの僧一人来りて土民に/向ひて雨を祈らバ甘露法雨と書たる札を立観音を/信心せよとさとしけれバ教への如くして祈りけるに三日目に/其丈六尺余の法師蓑笠を着(き)て山の上の岩に笈を/おろし杖をもて岩を突バ忽ち水湧出て滝のごとく流るれバ/里人等喜びて是を呑ミ彼法師を敬ひけれバ吾六十余州を/巡りて此霊地に至る此所百番順礼の結願所とすれバ/今茲に西国をかたどりて阿弥陀をおき坂東をかた/どりて東方の薬師をおき此観音をおきて則/百番となる吾笈摺を納むるのち必熊野/権現をはじめあまたの権現来るがゆへ信心/おこたる事なかれ今そ雨降といふより早く/失給ふ間もなく法雨忽ち降りて衆生の命助かり/けれバ弥尊びぬ札立峠の名も茲に始るといふ也

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
