Europe, Prints and Drawings

One of two designs by Bruegel (Spring and Summer) for a Four Seasons series issued by Cock in 1570. Fall and Winter were designed by Hans Bol, although no drawings for these prints survive. All four were probably engraved by van der Heyden, although only Spring bears his monogram.

In plate, within image: Cock excu. Bruegel Inuet; lower margin, left: Iulius, Augustus, nec non et Iunius Aestas. [July, August, and also June make Summer]; in cartouche, lower center: AESTAS// Adoles centie imago/imago [Summer, image of youth]; lower margin, right: Frugiferas aruis fert Aestas torrida messeis. [Hot summer brings bounteous harvests to the fields]
