Charitable institutions play a large role in the Microcosm, partly as a way to remind the book’s wealthy purchasers of the good works to which they might contribute. Blue Coat schools were charity organizations for promising but indigent students. This plate shows the highlight of the year, when the best student orators perform for the governors and patrons in Latin and Greek. The winners would go on to Oxford and Cambridge on full scholarship.
