THE MFA’S IS STATE IV.
I (Da?, 1 impression; Ha). A girl stands on the right bank of a sluice, her lower legs not indicated. With the signature and date Seymour Haden 1877 (D, l.l. very faint).
II (D1? Hb). A boy stands near the girl, his lower legs not indicated. A second boy sits on a high grassy bank on the left near the sluice gate and bridge; the wall of the bank is not worked. There is a mill in the left background.
III (H1). Additional work behind boy and girl on right, the stones of the left bank depicted and some work on the roof of the mill on the left. Additional work on the front of the bank at the lower left, and water appears to be rushing out of the sluice gate and swirling around the stone wall. The previous inscription partially burnished and the new signature and date Seymour Haden 1977 (D. l.r., the date in reverse).
IV. The lower legs of the boy drawn in. The work in the water to the left of the girl much reduced.
