The Stranded Boat
Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819–1904)
58.1 x 93.66 cm (22 7/8 x 36 7/8 in.)
Medium or Technique
Oil on canvas
Not On View
A masterful evocation of the coast shrouded in fog, this painting deviates from the typical horizontal emphasis of Heade’s seascapes and marshes. The title, probably not original, is misleading, as the boat has been carefully beached and secured to a stake on the shore.
