THE MFA OWNS BOTH STATES III (M4999) AND V (35.1294). THIS IS STATE III.
I (Ha). A stream which fills the foreground is crossed by a wooden bridge, beyond which are trees. Two cows facing the viewer stand in the water in the left foreground. There is no work within 30 mm. of the left edge of the plate. With the inscription Seymour Haden 1881 (E, l.r.).
II (Hb). The left cow removed.
III (Hi). The plate reduced to 178 x 260 mm. The distant scene in the upper left added in drypoint, and a man walking on the roadway. Higher trees added in the right distance with drypoint. THIS IS STATE III (M4999).
IV. Additional etched work on the tree in upper right and a man with a ladder added near the haystack.
V (H2). Faint drypoint clouds added to the sky. There is little bur on the drypoint work. THIS IS STATE V (35.129).
