Loosely-woven undyed linen cloth. Stained, torn at edges. Design: tapestry band. Bold formal Kufic inscription (.025 high) in brown silk; on cream linen ground ornamented with two fine horizontal lines in brown. Inscription: “In the name of God the Compassionate the Merciful. El Mansur, El Hakim bi amri ‘llah, Commander of the Faithful, son of el ‘Aziz billah. May God lengthen his days…”.


Purchased in Cairo, Egypt by Joseph Lindon Smith (b. 1863 - d. 1950) for the MFA for $500 [see note 1]. (Accession Date: January 21, 1932)
