DescriptionPublished in: Andrew Bigelow, Travels in Malta and Sicily, with Sketches of Gibraltar in MDCCCXXVII (Boston: Published by Carter, Hendee & Babcock. New York -- Elam Bliss, 1831).

This plate removed from Sylvester Koehler's copy of the book, by Koehler himself (the book bears MFA accession number KBR1430).

Bigelow notes in his introduction that: "As it was desirable, not for mere embellishment, but for the sake of illustration, to introduce some lithograph prints into this work, — and the author himself being no draughtsman, — he was obliged in selecting from the materials which he possessed, to avail himself of the sketches of others." Thus, "The Topographical Chart of Mount AEtna, as stated in the Appendix, was framed from two plans transmitted from a Sicilian friend and correspondent." (Bigelow, Travels in Malta, page v)
