Tall urn with separate cover; the urn base has a circular, stepped, molded foot, a thick stem with faceted baluster shape; and is engraved “Sacred / to / the memory / of / Washington” inside a box bordered with engraved leaves, berries, flowers, and ribbons; the high-dome cover rises sharply to a faceted, tooled, and applied pointed finial.

Made for Henry Whitney (1785-1859) about 1830; by descent to Sidney Algernon Sage in 1859; to Frances Abby Sage Adams in 1869; to Willis Sage Adams in 1930; to Bruce Kirke Adams in 1947; to Lois Adams Wilson in 1996; consigned to "The January Sale, Early American Glass, catalog of sale closing 14th January 1997," lot 200 , held by Collector's Sales and Service of Middletown, Rhode Island; purchased at the auction by Mr. and Mrs. George E. Hall, South Hadley, Massachusetts, and placed on loan to Museum by Mrs. Hall (Sage Adams Hall); converted to gift in 2001 by Sage Adams Hall.
