DescriptionThibault was a pensioner of the French Academy in Rome beginning in 1780. He painted these pictures after his return to France, where he exhibited Roman views in the Paris Salons of 1795 and 1796. In these two neo-classical landscapes Thibault provides glimpses of architecture, but it is the lush gardens that capture his fancy, inhabited by men and women dressed "all'antica." His fine technique and carefully rendered light enliven the precisely observed and ordered spaces. The last named points toward his later career as professor of perspective at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
